Contra-actions to Artificial Nails Contra-actions to artificial Nail Structures.
A contra-action to artificial nail application is an adverse condition that appears after the nails have been applied. Examples are: ~ Thinning, splitting and flaking of the natural nail plate ~ Infection ~ Softening of the natural nail plate ~ Allergies
Thinning, splitting and flaking of the natural nail plate
appearance
causes
Treatment/solution
When the artificial structure is removed, the natural free edge is very thin. It can be bent or torn using very little pressure
Excessive filing of the nail plate during preparation
Excessive filling whilst blending the tip
Incorrect removal of the structure
Client picking or biting the structure
Maintenance over due and the extensions are unbalanced
Nail extension too long, too thick or too thin
For next treatment use light pressure and correct abrasive
Use pre tailoring and blending techniques and apply a protective layer of resin.
Advise client to visit salon for removal and maintenances
Keep free edge short
Allow the thin nail plate to grow out
Apply nail strengthener
Do not re-apply artificial structures until thin nails have grown out
Infection
Appearance
Causes
Treatment/solution
Redness, inflammation and pus in the cuticle area and surrounding skin; separation of nail plate from nail bed at the flesh line or dark spots between the artificial nail structure and natural nail plate
Lack of hygiene
Incorrect home care
Lifting of product allowing moisture to become trapped in the layers
Prolonged exposure to products used in artificial nail application, particularly over use of primer
Natural nail not dehydrated before product application
Product has lifted & moisture is trapped between the layers
Nail plate was wet before product was applied
Allow the softened nail to grow out, keeping the free edge short. Apply nail strengthener and do not reapply artificial nail structures until soft nails have grown out.
Physical trauma
Appearance
Causes
Treatment/solution
Bruising, ridges in the nail plate, cuts and abrasions to the cuticle and surrounding skin.
Bruising- too much pressure applied to nails during treatment
Ridges- excessive filing in one place of the nail during treatment
Cuts & Abrasions- careless use of files & buffers.
Allow bruises and ridges to grow out
Apply antiseptic to cuts and abrasions
Take extreme care during application. Use tools correctly and do not apply too much pressure. Ensure tools are of high quality with no sharp or rough edges.
Allergies
Appearance
Causes
Treatment/solution
A typical allergic reaction appears as contact dermatitis:
Itchiness
Inflammation
Swelling
Blistering followed by weeping, dryness, flaking of skin.
An ingredient such as formaldehyde resin round in nail enamels and hardeners.
Hypersensitive skin
The product must be removed immediately and a soothing lotion applied. If symptoms persist refer to a GP for medical advice.
Same as above and avoid using perfumed and harsh products. A patch test could be performed 48 prior to treatment
An allergy to nail enamel is more likely to appear on the clients face and neck (eyelids, around the mouth, sides of neck and upper chest) as a result of touching the skin and bringing it in contact with the offending ingredient present in the enamel. Symptoms may not be seen until 24-48 hours after initial contact.
