Introduction to Nails The history of artificial nails The idea of artificial nails came from the dental industry. Dental technicians used chemicals from the "acrylic" family, which when mixed together, could be moulded to form crowns to go into the mouth. Similar products were used to create artificial nails. The first type of nail extension was created from applying a liquid and powder mix over the natural nail and extended over a nail form. When the mixture has set, the form was removed and the structure shaped into a nail. Plastic nail tips that could be stuck on to natural nails with an adhesive had been around for quite a while. It wasn't long before the tips were used as supports for the acrylic structure. The Nail Industry The nail extension service is a rapidly growing are in the beauty industry. Nail extensions were once an "add-on" service for beauty therapist and hairdressers, now it is a booming business that has its own identity, with many nail salons that offer beauty treatments as an "add-on" service to the main business of nails.
